Neuromuscular
The purpose of Neuromuscular Massage Therapy (NMT) is to rid your
body of trigger points (or "knots" as most people call
them). A trigger point is an area in your muscle that is constantly
in contraction as a result of direct trauma, accident, or even stress.
It is believed that even your job can cause lasting imprints on
your body!
NMT
treats trigger points, tight muscles and chronic pain. It eases
chronic tension in the muscles and can dramatically improve your
flexibility and range of motion. Ranging from gentle pressure in
order to release trigger points, to stretches in which the therapist
and client work as a team, this modality is helpful to almost everyone.
When
might you be interested in asking for NMT? Usually that will be
determined by your therapist. However, for your information, there
are basically five problems with the nervous and muscular systems
that your therapist will tend to address with NMT:
|
|
• |
Ischemia
- a hypersensitivity to touch resulting from inadequate blood supply
to the tissues. |
• |
Nerve
Compression - abnormal pressure on nerves by either bone, muscle,
or other soft tissue. |
• |
Trigger
Points - hypersensitive points within muscles in which damage has
caused the build-up of calcium deposits that prohibit normal muscle
relaxation, keeping the muscle in permanent contraction |
• |
Musculo-skeletal
imbalance - an abnormal range of motion, often the result of heavy
lifting, sports injuries, or repetitive motion injuries. |
• |
Postural
imbalances - occur when the body no longer moves along the normal
longitudinal and horizontal planes. |
